Facial Action Coding System

چکیده
The Facial Action Coding System (FACS) is a widely used protocol for recognizing and labelling facial expression by describing the movement of muscles of the face. FACS is used to objectively measure the frequency and intensity of facial expressions without assigning any emotional meaning to those muscle movements. Instead FACS breaks down facial expressions into their smallest discriminable movements called Action Units. Each Action Unit creates a distinct change in facial appearance, such as an eyebrow lift or nose wrinkle. FACS coders can identify the Action Units which are present on the face when viewing still images or videos. Psychological research has used FACS to examine a variety of research questions including social-emotional development, neuropsychiatric disorders, and deception. In the course of this report we provide an overview of FACS and the Action Units, its reliability as a measure, and how it has been applied in some key areas of psychological research.

An Expert System for Recognition of Facial Actions and their Intensity
The Facial Action Coding System (FACS) is an objective method for quantifying facial movement in terms of 44 component actions, i.e. Action Units (AUs). This system is widely used in behavioral investigations of emotion, cognitive process and social interaction. Highly trained human experts (FACS coders) presently perform the coding. This paper presents a system that can automatically recognize...

In an attempt to discover the facial action units for affective states that occur during complex learning, this study adopted an emote-aloud procedure in which participants were recorded as they verbalized their affective states while interacting with an intelligent tutoring system (AutoTutor). Participants’ facial expressions were coded by two expert raters using Ekman’s Facial Action Coding S...
متن کاملFully Automatic Facial Action Recognition in Spontaneous Behavior
We present results on a user independent fully automatic system for real time recognition of facial actions from the Facial Action Coding System (FACS). The system automatically detects frontal faces in the video stream and codes each frame with respect to 20 Action units. We present preliminary results on a task of facial action detection in spontaneous expressions during discourse. Support ve...
متن کاملCoding, Analysis, Interpretation, and Recognition of Facial Expressions
We describe a computer vision system for observing facial motion by using an optimal estimation optical flow method coupled with geometric, physical and motion-based dynamic models describing the facial structure. Our method produces a reliable parametric representation of the face's independent muscle action groups, as well as an accurate estimate of facial motion. Previous efforts at analysis...
متن کاملAutomated face analysis by feature point tracking has high concurrent validity with manual FACS coding.
The face is a rich source of information about human behavior. Available methods for coding facial displays, however, are human-observer dependent, labor intensive, and difficult to standardize. To enable rigorous and efficient quantitative measurement of facial displays, we have developed an automated method of facial display analysis. In this report, we compare the results with this automated...
متن کاملRecognizing Upper Face Action Units for Facial Expression Analysis
We develop an automatic system to analyze subtle changes in upper face expressions based on both permanent facial features (brows, eyes, mouth) and transient facial features (deepening of facial furrows) in a nearly frontal image sequence. Our system recognizes fine-grained changes in facial expression based on Facial Action Coding System (FACS) action units (AUs). Multi-state facial component ...
